The coastal beach town of Encinitas is located approximately 25 km from San Diego County (40 kilometers)north of San Diego in North County and 95 miles (153 kilometers) south of Los Angeles. The city had a population of 59,518 people according to the 2010 census. The cultivation of ornamental flowers, particularly poinsettias, is the city’s most important industry. The city of Old (historic) Encinitas, new Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Olivenhain were formed in 1986 from the communities of Old (historic) Encinitas, new Encinitas, Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, and Olivenhain. These communities maintain their individual identities and cuisines. Old Encinitas is a tiny oceanfront village with a mix of shops and residences. The legendary Swamis surf break and the Encinitas welcome arch.

A low coastal hill separates Old Encinitas from New Encinitas. New Encinitas is a newer area with golf courses, a plethora of shopping centers, and larger tract houses. Olivenhain is a semi-rural area in eastern Encinitas that is largely made up of single-family houses and estates, as well as a 4-H Club and a few private equestrian amenities. Leucadia is the city’s older beach community. The streets and boulevards in Leucadia are lined with trees. There are art galleries, odd boutiques, and eateries in the neighborhood. Cardiff-by-the-Sea is Encinitas’ southernmost coastal neighborhood, with streets named after British cities and classical musicians, as well as the Lux Art Institute and Mira Costa College’s San Elijo Campus. Batiquitos and San Elijo Lagoons flank the city.
